Nodular acne is a form of acne characterized by firm, painful lumps just below the surface of the skin. They often appear in clusters that appear red and inflamed.
There are various causes of nodular acne, including excessive sweating, hormonal changes, genetics, stress, and even reactions to skincare products.
In this post, we’ll explore the dos and don’ts for treating nodular acne at home. This should be in addition to a treatment plan you have developed with your dermatologist for best results.
Do: Use Medication as Prescribed
When treating your acne at home, it’s important to follow your doctor’s instructions for care.
Nodular acne can be diagnosed by a dermatologist. During particularly bad breakouts, they may prescribe different medications depending on the cause. If this is the case for you, then use the medication as prescribed by your doctor.
This may mean applying a prescription-strength retinoid to the acne at the first signs of development. For others, it may mean taking an antibiotic or using birth control pills.
Don’t: Overdo Face Washing
While nodular acne is caused by blocked pores, it is possible to overwash your face. This will not only leave your skin looking dry and dull, but it can also compound the problem.
The natural oils that develop on your skin are meant to protect it from irritants and bacteria. If you strip the skin of its natural oils, it may leave you more susceptible to infection.
So when should you wash?
At a minimum, wash your face in the morning, at night, and after you sweat. You should also moisturize to replenish that healthy skin barrier.
Note: You should always wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water prior to washing your face. This is especially important for those who are prone to developing nodular acne or those currently dealing with a breakout.
Do: Drink Plenty of Water
Water is not the solution to every skincare problem. However, a hydrated body is one that is better able to cleanse itself of irritants, impurities, and blockages.
How much water do you need? That varies from person to person.
The standard recommendation is 64 ounces, or 8 cups, of water per day. That may be too much, too little, or just enough depending on many factors.
So how can you know if you’re drinking enough?
The color of your urine is the best indicator of hydration levels.
A pale yellow color is what you’re aiming for. If it’s clear, ease back on the hydration. If it’s a darker yellow, then drink a little more. It’s all about balance.
Don’t: Conceal with Makeup
You may be tempted to hide your breakouts under a layer of makeup. While they may offer you some short-term “relief,” it’s also a recipe for worsening the situation.
Nodular acne has many causes, as mentioned above. The underlying reason, though, is clogged pores. By adding makeup on top of that, you’re further blocking the pores. This can prevent them from releasing the bacteria that’s causing the painful bumps. It could even contribute to further penetration within the pores.
When you have a nodular acne breakout, you should avoid anything that’s comedogenic. The best thing you can do is to wash your face as usual, and perhaps apply a light moisturizer afterwards.
